Illinois: nation's third-largest popcorn producer
Your tax dollars at work:
By the way, it passed unanimously. But was rejected a few hours later in The Metro.
Gov. Blagojevich gave Illinois residents something new to chew on Monday:
He signed a bill making popcorn the state's official snack.
The bill was championed by a group of second- and third-graders from M.J. Cunningham Elementary School in Joliet. Their teacher had found inspiration in a Massachusetts legislature's decision to make Boston cream pie that state's official dessert.
Illinois is the nation's third-largest popcorn producer.
I think the part I like the best is "championed by second and third graders." It must have been a lot of work for those kids. Late nights pawing through reports followed by up-all-night binge drinking when the bill was finally signed. I did the same thing this weekend, except the only bill I was mulling over was whether or not to pay $15 for 2 hours of "all you can drink."He signed a bill making popcorn the state's official snack.

Shaun Irving's Camera Van Brakes for Close-Ups
There's an absolutely wonderful story in Wired today. Camera Van Brakes for Close-Ups is about a guy, Shaun Irving, who transformed a 1987 mail truck and assorted lenses and turned them into the world's largest traveling camera.
He constructed the machine, dubbed Peanut, out of an old mail-delivery truck he bought on eBay and surplus military parts, including a lens that came straight from a submarine periscope. The camera truck takes photos that are 4 feet tall and 8 feet wide -- more than 3,000 times larger than the typical negative.
An absolute great story - especially after you visit his site and read about what his future plans are:After that, I'll pursue what has been my dream with Peanut all along: to teach America's under served youth about photography. I'll drive Peanut to schools, libraries, museums and summer camps—holding workshops on pinhole photography for students. I'll let them climb in the truck themselves to get a better sense of how cameras work.

Hiker in the buff won't let arrests stop him
When is it a good time to stop hiking naked along the length of Britain? Apparently not after you've been arrested 8 times, had an examination at a psychiatric hospital and having spent several nights in jail. Not even getting beaten up will deter Steve Gough from accomplishing his goal. The Suntimes reports that the hiker in the buff won't let arrests stop him.

God makes bad things happen
Soon, the United States Postal Service (USPS) could be tracking your letters to grandma by using barcodes or special stamps, identifying, at a minimum, the sender, the destination and the class of mail. And of course privacy watchdogs worry that requiring sender identification for all mail presents serious risks to civil liberties.

TOTALLY shmomosexual
George W. Bush is now not only a president, but also an action figure.
TOTALLY shmomosexual... totally.
You Are Beautiful (via TMN) - No really, you are. But this isn't about YOU now is it? Why does it always have to be about you.
The new Elite Force Aviator action figure sports the naval aviator flight uniform Bush wore when he landed May 1 on the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln to declare an end to major combat in Iraq.
The foot-tall figure, made by Blue Box Toys, comes fully equipped with authentic gear, featuring a cloth flight suit, helmet with oxygen mask, survival vest, g-pants and a parachute harness.
The Bush doll will show up in KB Toys stores on Sept. 15 with a price tag of $39.99, according to published reports.
I swear to God... if you buy this doll you should seek some serious counseling. Although, I'll just hold out and wait to see all of the wonderful homemade videos that will be made starring this action figure. And yes, I do believe he and Ken will be servicing each other - some how.The foot-tall figure, made by Blue Box Toys, comes fully equipped with authentic gear, featuring a cloth flight suit, helmet with oxygen mask, survival vest, g-pants and a parachute harness.

North East blackout
Of course the big news yesterday and today is the massive power-outage that affected most of northeast. Although New York City seemed to be getting all of the coverage my hometown of Syracuse was even hit. If you try to visit the site now all you get is a blog discussing the power outage because the web servers are still down. I did find myself watching at least a little bit of it on TV last night. I wasn't so captivated by it - I have my priorities - besides, Pyramid was on and for some reason I like that show.
Eddie called me at work yesterday to tell me about the power-outage and the first thing he said was "We're at war again!" I didn't believe him but felt the need to shout out the message to everyone else at work. Of course, we were not at war. The blackout was not caused by terrorists but by idiots who failed to protect the power grid. It's reassuring to know that in one fell swoop someone could take out the power grid leaving many states helpless. It was predicted 2 years ago by David Cook, general counsel for the nation's electric reliability organization, that the system was going to crash.
In lighter news, Amy returns this afternoon/evening from a week-long visit with her grandmother. It has been a long and interesting week without her here. Needless to say I am welcoming her return with open arms. I can't wait to see her again.

Apple's G5 ships today
If you check out Apple's web site today you'll notice that the G5's started shipping. Single processors only. The Dual-ies are later this year. I don't know of anyone personally who has ordered one, though. I'm thinking that the Apple stores should have them in them soon, if they aren't there already.
Have you seen The Life of David Gale? Another great movie with Kevin Spacey. And aside from the film alone, the music was very good. I think this a soundtrack that Amy would like to own - keep that in mind.

poohbear@writeme.com - spam welcome
You know what's fun to do from time to time - searching the internet for information about yourself. It seems selfish, I know, but there is something neat about finding old posts that I made in 1999 to rec.music.tori-amos. Just look for poohbear@writeme.com. The address of which no longer exists so spam it all you like.
mmmm Tori - I wonder if she's touring soon?
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?! She was here August 10th! CURSES!

Taco Bell Recall Election Taco Poll
The California govenor recall election is a little cooky, don't you think? I mean, Arnold Schwarzenegger is evening running - and he looks good to win right now. CrAzY times we live in. So, luckily Taco Bell has come along to make the election seem even less important. It's the Taco Bell Recall Election Taco Poll. Californian Taco Bells are tallying votes for particular candidates based on the type of taco (or burrito) you purchase. For instance, purchase a beef crunchy taco and TB will count that as a vote for Arnold. Makes sense to me. (via TMN)
And speaking of recalling politicians - there's a site campaigning for Bush's recall. I'm tempted to sign the petition myself.
Cubs are sucking it up - they had the chance to pull ahead by half a game but instead, they are now a game and a half out of first. Bah to the Cubs. Tonight is Elvis Night at US Cellular field as the White Sox take on the Texas Rangers. At least the Sox are in first, right?

Congratulations on your engagement
Congratulations!! I got BIG BIG news today - which makes me rather eXcited. My sister, Jennifer Miner (she's technically my step-sister but in reality she is my sister through and through) got ENGAGED! Her long-time boyfriend, Nate, proposed to her on one of the mountains in the Catskill Mountains on Sunday 24 August 2002. It's rather amusing because they have been together longer than Amy and I have and although Amy and I announced our engagement 2 years ago they have decided to wait. We would ask them, "So, when are you guys going to do this??" And they both would chuckle and smile and say, "someday." Jen was finishing grad school and this year she completed her thesis, defended it and will receive her degree this fall. So, I guess they were waiting til that moment arrived. So, this begs the question (as it always has I suppose) - which method of proposing marriage is less (or more) conventional these days? Some backgroud: Jen and Nate have been living together and they are even looking for a house together. Everyone knew they were going to get married. It was just a matter of time with them. On the other hand, I proposed to Amy just a few months after we met. I guess I think that people still announce their engagement 1 year before they get married - irregardless of the fact that they may already be living together.
I know next year when we make the "formal" announcement it won't carry half the weight. It will simply be following the rest of the wedding rules.

Oui Oui!
So it's Thursday 28 August, right before a holiday weekend. So, that can only mean one thing - I'm not working tomorrow or Monday. Quite a long weekend if you ask me. Unfortunately, tomorrow is a "forced" vacation day becuase the hospitals still aren't doing well. Bah... I have enough to do at work. These days off aren't helping me at all.
Do you think Schwarzenegger will be govenor of California? Take a look at the interview he did for Oui magazine back in 1977 a now-defunct adult magazine published by Playboy. He talks about orgies, drugs and homosexuality. Oh, what a bad bad man he was!
Dancing would be nice... maybe I'll do that at work.
