It seems like a damn week already and I'm STILL downloading this 3.6 GB monster of a torrent. Episodes 1-44 are nearly here - I can almost taste it. Oh, Meatwad, Frylock, and the e-larious Master Shake... oh how you amuse me causing such great pain in my stomach as I laugh so hard. But, why is my download speed so slow with this some times!?! It just slows down everything to the point where you're like "what broadband?" It's such a pain to be a pirate sometmes. Arghhhh. Dude, what's up with this (Mojo) JoJo kid? Why is a 13 year old breaking up with someone via musical whimsy? What does she know about heartbeak and despair? Why do her parents allow her to dance and wear clothing that might suggest to some that she is versed in the language of love? Why does she have the #1 song on Billboard's Top 40 Mainstream? Why whenever I hear "Leave (Get Out)" do I instantly break out into song (and sometimes dance)? I'm already sick of Ashlee Simpson, by the way. Thanks for tuning in to "Ed Trys to Figure Out Today's Kids!"

The first 44 episodes of ATHF have been received and consequently burned on CDs for archive and eNjoyment. Likewise, season 8 of The Simpsons has seen an equal fate. yummy! Folks, if you have a MAC like Amy's Powerbook then I have 2 indispensible programs that I am LOVING. The first is Virtual PC 6 which was originally made by Connectix (the same folks that also brought us Virtual Game Station- in which one could play PS1 games on any MAC running OS 9) but Microsoft bought the company over a year ago and has since stopped production on Game Station but not necessarily Virtual PC. VPC emulates any PC operating system provided you have the original installer disks for the appropriate OS. As if they're that hard to come by... Anyway, I've used VPC for years and years and years but it always seemed rather slow and it was really only good for those types of programs that only run on a PC. The best example of a program like this is the one we use when we create the virtual tours that we do. Still, although it does work on the G4 it still seems slow - even to boot up and shut down. All that changes, though, when you throw VPC on to Amy's Powerbook. VPC runs faster and everything seems quicker to respond. This really means that we have all the pieces for a true mobile virtual tour production. Look for some more info about them coming soon from Amy's website - http://www.amyseye.com The second program is called Audio Hijack from Rogue Amoeba. It essentially reroutes any audio from any program through itself first and then outputs it to your speakers. The point? The reason? Why, to hijack (err... record) streaming audio of course! Like, oh say, an online radio station (What? Huh? Which one? How about ANY from DI.fm - my particular favorite is Hard House). It records the stream as an AIFF file which means that all I gotta do is drop it into another program (like the Open Source Audacity developed at dear, ol' Carnegie Mellon University) and I can then export it as a much more portable MP3. Yea, word... This will come in handy to record the live sets that Bassdrive and others stream. To bang, you don't even need to be there. Just set the record time and it does the rest. Loving it! I gotta get me a Powerbook. grrrr. Update: What was I thinking - just drop the AIFF file into iTunes and then convert the track to MP3 from there. It's converting it at a rate of about 10x so my 1 hour 43 minutes and 19 seconds track (originally a touch over 1 gigabyte) will only take about 10 minutes from the time I import it to the time it's converted and will now be 118Mb (bitrate set to 160 kpbs - although I should set it to a lower rate since it streams at a lower rate so I don't get any benefits of it being higher). Really cool, though.

Big (as in popular) story yesterday was that a suspected tour bus (perhaps the one being operated for the Dave Matthew's Band that was in town the other day) emptied its sewage contents into the Chicago River. Unfortunately, some folks taking a water tour got the raw end of that deal. From the Suntimes:

Chicago Police are investigating whether tour buses for a rock band dumped raw sewage from the Kinzie Street bridge onto people aboard a popular architecture boat tour Sunday. "It was terrible,'' said Holly Agra, president of Chicago's First Lady Cruises. "Everybody is a victim except the people on the bus, the people who did that. It's unforgettable. I find it hard to believe it was an accident. We certainly would like the owners and operators to step forward without us having to chase them down.'' More than 100 people were aboard the packed Chicago's First Lady at 1:20 p.m. Sunday when the sewage was dumped from two tour buses passing overhead, witnesses told police. The sewage splashed onto the boat and into the eyes and mouths of tourists. The boat immediately returned to the dock, and five people went to Northwestern Memorial Hospital for tests and treatment, police said.

I heard this story on WGN Radio and what the Suntimes fails to mention is that the license plate of Dave Matthew's tour bus was mentioned to the police. As is the usual case, the Chicago Tribune has a more detailed story of the accounts. Aside from the quotes from Mayor Daley and the points about multiple agencies investigating the case, this is the part about the band:

One witness gave police an Oregon license plate number that belongs to a luxury tour bus for rock star Dave Matthews, who was in town before playing the second of two shows at Alpine Valley in East Troy, Wis., Sunday night. But the driver said his bus could not have been responsible because it was parked in front of a hotel several blocks away at the time of the episode.

DMB denies the allegations of course - I'll keep you posted as the story develops.

Sam's Wines and Spirits is a wonderful place to purchase your favorite wines - and on the cheap. When we lived in the city we used to go to the one off of North Avenue on a frequent basis. However, now that we live in the western suburbs we have resided to purchasing our wine from Costco or to lesser degree Jewel or Dominick's. Costco is priced right but with a terribly small selection. Jewel and Dominick's are just way over priced and again the selection is rather limited. But, I have just learned that on August 20th (this week) another location will be opening and this time it's in Downers Grove by I-355 and Butterfield Rd (perfect location)! If you eNjoy good wine but don't want to break open the bank to afford a variety of bottles then I highly recommend Sam's Wines and Spirits. Even if you can't make it to one of their locations you can order online and have it shipped to you. One thing I particularly find interesting on their website is that you can order a case of beer online and have it delivered to your home. Now, if only they shipped it in a cooler so it was icey cold upon delivery - leaving the house would no longer be as necessary.

Los Angeles, home of the Bloods and the Cripts (sp?) has been interesting and tiring. So tiring that now we must sleep. And have one last cocktail.
